Community Fire Safety: A Community Talk
Presented by: Vancouver Fire Rescue Services
1. Home Fire Safety:
o Smoke Alarms & Escape Plans: The importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home. We will provide guidance on monthly testing and annual battery replacement, as well as on creating and practicing a clear home escape plan with a designated outdoor meeting place.
o Kitchen & Electrical Safety: We’ll cover common cooking hazards, the danger of unattended cooking, and safe practices for using electrical appliances, including avoiding overloaded outlets and frayed cords.
2. Battery Safety:
o Understanding the Risk: A special focus will be placed on the growing risk of fires from lithium-ion batteries found in devices like laptops, e-bikes, and scooters. This aligns with the national Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™.”
o Safe Practices: We will provide actionable tips on how to safely use, charge, and store batteries to prevent overheating, including using only manufacturer-approved chargers and avoiding charging devices on soft surfaces like beds or couches. We’ll also emphasize the correct way to recycle damaged or expired batteries.
3. Prevention Concepts:
o Proactive Habits: This section will highlight everyday habits that reduce fire risk, such as keeping flammable materials away from heat sources, properly extinguishing smoking materials, and avoiding unattended candles.
o Emergency Response: We will instruct attendees on what to do in case of a fire, including the importance of staying low to the ground to avoid smoke and the “Get Out, Stay Out” rule. We will also touch on the proper use of a fire extinguisher.
