| This workshop is about promoting strong sense of self, preventing violence (including date/acquaintance rape and violence by a random attacker), and striking back in the event of an attack. The workshop will emphasize having fun and enjoying life, while being alert and thinking about safety.
We'll stretch to warm up; talk about avoiding potential places/situations; practice non-verbal communication techniques to project confidence; role-play scenarios involving possible date/acquaintance rape; discuss positive aspects of being girls/young women; and learn lots of effective self-defense techniques to disarm/disable attackers--some time will be spent on fighting back a 'live' mock attacker.
About the Insturctor:
Since she was 10 years of age, Dr Farah Shroff has been doing various forms of martial arts: judo, tae kwon do, karate, jiu-jitsu. She's also done yoga, dance, soccer, triathlons and lots of other athletic activities. She enjoys facilitating self-defense, teaching at UBC in the medical school and researching public health issues. She lives in Vancouver with her children and spouse.

| This program is designed to introduce and foster essential life skills many of which are unaddressed for children and young people today growing up in North American communities. We will teach young people how to successfully navigate from "Inspiration to Creation" with their own ideas on changing their community. Ideas range from adding juice machines to their schools, to annual fashion shows, to designing and creating a skate park in their neighbourhood. Everyone will learn how to adopt and adapt good ideas into their community. No class May 24th.
